Dear ASSR Colleagues,

I am pleased to share a great step forward in the care of our patients with back pain, osteoporosis, and painful vertebral compression fractures. The results of the VERTOS V study were released in Radiology today. The authors showed that vertebroplasty can provide effective pain relief and quality of life improvement for patients with chronic painful osteoporotic compression fractures- those with pain sustained for greater than three months.

The study was performed by a well-regarded group from the Netherlands with the only non-European author, our own past ASS and ASNR President, Josh Hirsch. In addition to the paper, I encourage all to read the invited commentary written by subject experts Drs. Doug Beale and Reade DeLacey.

Vertebroplasty versus Active Control Intervention for Chronic Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures: The VERTOS V Randomized Controlled Trial

Management of Chronic Vertebral Compression Fractures with Vertebroplasty: Focus on Clinical Symptoms

We are proud to be a part of these efforts to provide the best possible care for patients everywhere, participating in cutting edge and practical research that will benefit us all. In a few weeks we will host our second ASS Webinar featuring these authors, describing the results of the trial and implications for the future. We invite you all to join us to learn more.

Sincerely,

Wende Gibbs

Past President, American Society of Spine Radiology
