Purpose

We wanted to create a lumbar puncture learning module unsing our new state of the art simulation center.

Methods & Materials

Trainees pass an online exam after reviewing a powerpoint presentation describing all the elements of the module. They then proceed to the simulation center where they practise techniques using a manequin under staff mentor supervision. Upon the recommendation of the mentor, and following video review, if they have passed the module, they retake the exam.

Results

Residents have enjoyed the learning experience. Early results show significant improvement both on the online exam, as well as per mentor feedback.

Conclusion

ACGME core competency project requires training programs to be creative in providing learning experiences which can be assesed with transparency and statistical evidence. Our simulation based lumbar puncture module is a novel approach to this new paradigm.
