Chiari Malformations: Imaging Appearances and Associated Abnormalities 2011

Chiari malformations, also known as Arnold-Chiari malformations, are a complex grouping of migration anomalies with a spectrum of associated abnormalities. The purpose of our scientific exhibit is to demonstrate the myriad of imaging presentations in these congenital disorders. These can range from isolated tonsillar displacement to complex brainstem herniation anomalies. While the etiology and pathogenesis remain somewhat unclear, CT, and more recently MRI, have emerged as two powerful tools for diagnosing these syndromes.

Methods & Materials

Multiple CT, as well as 1.5 and 3T MRI, images were reviewed over the past five years from multiple institutions. Cases were reviewed and classified according to type of Chiari malformation (I, II, III, and â
