Purpose

To provide a pictorial review of the effects of different metabolic diseases on the intervertebral disk space

Methods & Materials

The imaging examinations (plain radiographs, computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging) of patients presenting with intervertebral disk pathology were correlated with the subsequent clinical work-up, including biopsy. The imaging findings were reviewed by experienced neuroradiologists and musculoskeletal radiologists.

Results

The imaging manifestations associated with metabolic disk disease are reviewed in entities such as gout, ochronosis, ankylosing spondylities, spondyloarthropathy of hemodialysis and others.

Conclusion

Intervertebral disk disease as seen on multiple modality imaging is not soley due to degenerative or infectious etiologies. These other entities, albeit, less common may present with diskogenic manifestations.
