A Letter from the President

We will start the 2023 meeting off with our very popular and always sold-out hands-on workshop on February 8th, 2023.  International experts in spine intervention will lead this full-day course comprised of didactic lectures and hands-on image-guided practice on specially constructed simulation models that mimic real-world challenges. This comprehensive course has been designed to bridge principles into practice and assist in building a skill set for spine intervention. This year’s workshop will cover spine biopsies, spine injections (nerve root blocks/epidurals/facet), nerve ablation, vertebral augmentation, spine implants and hardware placement, spine tumor ablation, and intra-discal ozone treatments.

Our general session will open with keynote speaker Kim Tzoumakas, Chief Executive Officer of RAYUS Radiology (formerly known as Centers for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI)). She will discuss current trends and future directions of diagnostic radiology, and will also be involved in a panel discussion with  Dr. Lubdha Shah’s Women in Spine on Wednesday night. The remainder of the opening session has talks on hot topics such as: ozone treatments in the spine, molecular basis of spine pain, and quantitative spine imaging with DTI.

Other meeting highlights include our young professional programming (an entire joint session created by our YPS representatives) and a Boot Camp with basics of spine imaging and anatomy. There will be multi-disciplinary sessions on management of spine metastatic disease with a tumor board with additional sessions on advanced oncology imaging.  Both General and IR sessions will address CSF leaks discussing advanced imaging, diagnosis and patient management, and interventional treatments.  Advanced topics including nerve imaging, peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulators and basivertebral nerve ablation will be presented and hopefully present new areas of practice growth in the attendees.  And what would the meeting be without the 4th annual ASSR Fun Run on early Friday morning!

This meeting is based on a tradition of excellent science and education for trainees and practicing physicians at all stages of their career in both academic and private practice settings.   The abundance of comradery and genuine friendships that arise out of this society is what attracted me to ASSR and well over a decade later it makes me proud that this environment is thriving and continues to grow.  We look forward to seeing you in Charleston, SC at ASSR 2023.
